HarvestLab measures moisture on the go

 

 

The HarvestLab moisture sensor mounts to the top of the discharge spout and takes accurate moisture readings of the crop through the sapphire glass lens as crop passes through the spout, the same technology forage labs use to measure moisture. For model year 2013, HarvestLab becomes more intelligent. Not only does HarvestLab measure moisture, but now it also has the ability to measure sugar, starch, acid detergent fiber (acid detergent fiber [ADF], neutral detergent fiber [NDF]), ash, and protein in corn silage.

When the HarvestLab system is used in conjunction with the Harvest Monitor™ system, a great deal of important information becomes available to the operator, including productivity in acres per hour, throughput in tons per hour, total area harvested, total crop mass harvested, yields, and moisture.

When the HarvestLab system is used in conjunction with a 7080 Series Self-Propelled Forage Harvester (SPFH) and a GreenStar™ display, AutoLOC™ functionality is automatically present. AutoLOC automatically varies the length of cut according to the desired crop-moisture correlation settings based on the moisture readings from the HarvestLab moisture sensor.

In-line crop delivery allows crop to flow continuously

 

  • Crop flow

The John Deere self-propelled forage harvester (SPFH) crop-flow concept is characterized by the crop accelerator positioned in a low location in the machine, resulting in long, chimney-type transition cones to the spout. This design results in minimum wear and power consumption in this area, where crop speed is naturally at its maximum. Material flows straight through from the feedrolls to the spout end cap without passing areas of abrupt crop funneling. This continuous crop flow, without interruption, ensures power-efficient operation and increases capacity.
 
Some competitors claim a better flow because they turn the crop turns at the cutterhead. However, John Deere changes the direction of the crop at the accelerator, which reduces carryover.

 

Dura-Drum™ cutterhead improves efficiency and wear life

  • 40-knife cutterhead

The John Deere self-propelled forage harvesters (SPFHs) feature the Dura-Drum knife-rotor concept. The main reason for implementing this multi-knife design is the fact that, besides the well-detectable ferrous metal foreign objects, the tedded and raked windrow crops often contain non-ferrous, organic, or mineral objects. Depending on the solidity of those parts, the forage harvester’s cutting components are prone to serious damage.

There are various attempts in the industry to equip machines with stone detectors due to the working principle of detecting the vertical acceleration of the feedrolls, with very little success.

John Deere’s solution is the Dura-Drum design allowing knife retraction when hitting dangerous, golf-ball-size hard rocks, which are almost invisible to those accelerometers used by others.

This popularity is strongly supported by John Deere’s cutterhead maintenance method, using reverse sharpening and knife service life maximized by multiple shearbar settings before regrinding the knives.

A DuraLine knife rotor option with hard-faced knife carriers delivers extended service life and can be an economic alternative in predominantly abrasive harvesting conditions like on extremely sandy soils or in irrigated crops.

The 40-knife cutterhead delivers a 6-mm to 26-mm (0.24-in. to 1-in.) length of cut without removing knives.

A DuraLine knife rotor option with hard-faced knife carriers delivers extended service life and can be an economic alternative in predominantly abrasive harvesting conditions like on extremely sandy soils or in irrigated crops.

The 40-knife cutterhead delivers a 6-mm to 26-mm (0.24-in. to 1-in.) length of cut without removing knives.

The 48-knife drum delivers a 5-mm to 22-mm (0.20-in. to 0.87-in.) length of cut without removing knives.

In a situation where two or all three knife rotor versions would deliver the desired chop length, the one with the highest number of knives should always be selected as it allows higher forage harvester capacity at the same lengths of cut as compared to the one with fewer knives.

If the length of cut is set to 19 mm (0.75 in.) on either a 40-knife cutterhead machine or a 48-knife cutterhead machine, the 48-knife cutterhead machine must spin the feedrolls faster to achieve the length of cut. A higher feedroll speed results in higher forage harvester capacity.

The enclosed drum helps to eliminate crop carryover for efficient delivery with reduced power requirements.

The knives are mounted in straight knife holders to deliver a vertical cut, straight through the mat, which results in uniform crop flow across the full width of the cutterhead band, kernel processor, and blower housing:

  • Improves efficiency and wear-life compared to competitors using the full-width, curved knives and holders

48-knife cutterhead

 

All machines come equipped with the cutterhead safety alarm. This audible alarm warns the operator and bystanders that the functional components of the machine are still turning and the operator is out of the seat. The alarm stops when the cutterhead rotation has stopped.

The Dura-Drum cutterhead is available with wide-tapered corn knives (1), angled corn knives (2), or grass knives (3).

 

Cutterhead knives

 

Wide-tapered corn knives (1) overlap to eliminate any uncut fine material.

Angled corn knives (2) require less power than straight corn knives. They are explicitly applicable in dry maize crops, safely preventing the harvester from yielding insufficiently cut leaves in the sample for maize harvest only.

Grass knives (3) are straight knives that are more resistant to damage by small stones when operating with a windrow pickup harvesting unit. Grass knives are:

  • Recommended when the majority of harvest work is done with a windrow pickup
  • Less efficient when harvesting corn, as compared with corn knives
  • More resilient to stones with the grass shearbar than with a corn shearbar, but grass knives tend to be less sharp

NOTE: With an increase of 10 mm (0.39 in.), the longer DuraLine grass knife allows more clamp-down area and increased knock-back capabilities. These knives can be ordered through Parts. The DuraLine grass knives retrofit all 6000, 7000, and 7050 Series Self-Propelled Forage Harvesters, but they must be replaced as a complete set when older knives are currently installed. It is important to only replace these longer knives with the same part to ensure proper cutterhead balance.

 

DuraLine high-wear parts significantly reduces time and money

 

  • Spout caps

John Deere self-propelled forage harvesters chop massive amounts of feed per hour. Every ton of feed going through the forage harvester comes into contact with wear parts. Due to increased machine usage (chopping more tons per hour), parts need to be replaced more frequently.

Tests show that chopping in the same crop conditions and chopping the same tonnage, DuraLine parts last four times as long, or longer, than standard parts. Time and money associated with replacing parts are significantly reduced.

DuraLine parts cover nearly every wear part that does not already have a high-wear solution. DuraLine parts include spiral band, kernel processor inlet chute, blower inlet chute, blower band, first spout wear plate, and spout caps.

 

Draper platform compatibility with John Deere forage harvesters provides a one-pass harvesting solution

John Deere SPFH have the capability of operating with the 625D and 630D Draper Platforms.

The SPFH and draper platform combination is a one-pass harvesting solution, which results in significant fuel, labor, and equipment savings.

Wide-body operator station provides all-around comfort

  • Operator's station

The 7080 Series' operator station offers features designed specifically for the forage harvester operator.

The large expanse of the curved, tinted glass ensures a clear front view to beyond the width of the harvesting units.

Visibility to the side and rear of the machine is virtually unobstructed since the cab is designed without rear cornerposts for greater spout visibility.

A front-window sun visor can be lowered to reduce glare.

Two large, electrically adjustable, heated convex mirrors are available. The cab also provides reduced vibration and noise levels during long harvesting hours.

 

Seat controls

The ComfortCommand™ seat eases the strain of long harvest hours. With independent vertical and horizontal adjustments, the seat can be easily adjusted to match the operator's size.

The ComfortCommand seat is equipped with an air-suspension system for added operator comfort.

The air-suspension seat has four main adjustments:

  • Height adjustment
  • Vertical shock dampener (limits the upward motion of the seat suspension)
  • Fore-aft attenuation control (locks out fore-aft motioning of the seat suspension)
  • Fore-aft positioning adjustment

NOTE: An operator-presence safety switch stops the harvesting unit and feedrolls if the operator leaves the seat for 5 seconds with the harvesting functions engaged.

A comfortable training seat with a seat belt is included with the machine along with a refrigerated box. This cool compartment is located behind the training seat for keeping beverages cool or a sack lunch fresh.

A Field Office™ option is available on all 7080 Series Self-Propelled Forage Harvesters, which includes a storage folder and a removable tray perfect for items such as compact discs, cassettes, and cell phones. The Field Office storage is located under the training seat.

 

Fuel-efficient engines with plenty of power

  • 13.5-L PowerTech™ engine

The 7080 Series Self-Propelled Forage Harvesters (SPFHs) use powerful, high-torque, in-line six-cylinder, turbocharged, aftercooled diesel engines.

The 7080 Series units have a self-bleeding system for automatic refueling after running out of fuel or changing fuel filters. This improved system greatly reduces the amount of time required to start the engine after running out of fuel or changing the fuel filters.

An automatic low-idle engine is also a feature of the 7080 Series. This feature automatically lowers engine rotations per minute (rpm) to low idle when the hydro handle is moved to neutral while in road mode. This helps to reduce fuel consumption and lower the amount of noise produced by the forage harvester.

The 7180 engines meet the appropriate off-road diesel emissions standards for Tier 3 requirements.

The 7280 to 7780 SPFH engines meet the appropriate off-road diesel emission standards for Interim Tier 4 (IT4) requirements. The 7950 SPFH engine meets the appropriate off-road diesel emission standards for Tier 2 requirements.

Infinitely variable length-of-cut (IVLOC™) transmission provides fast and consistent cut changes without leaving cab

  • IVLOC transmission

The IVLOC transmission uses the strength and reliability of gears to drive the system combined with the control and flexibility of hydraulics, thus providing fast and consistent length-of-cut changes without leaving the cab.

The IVLOC is powered by a shaft from the cutterhead. Power is transferred through the transmission using idler gears and fed into a planetary system that drives the feedrolls.

A hydrostatic motor is in mesh with the ring gear of the planetary system and controls the speed of the feedrolls. The cutterhead speed remains constant, but the feedroll speed can be changed on the go as the operator chooses the desired length of cut from the cab.

The gear-driven and hydraulically controlled IVLOC gives the forage harvester unparalleled flexibility. It provides a longer length of cut ranging from 4 mm to 19 mm (0.16 in. to 0.75 in.) and from 5 mm to 22 mm (3/16 in. to 7/8 in.)
